Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipe Fights Costly Corrosion

Oil and gas producers who are looking for a smart alternative to steel pipes can now turn to reinforced  thermoplastic pipe (RTP) made with DuPont™ KEVLAR® brand fiber. Recent innovations by pipe manufacturers in the joint systems of these pipes have made them an excellent choice in situations where high levels of corrosion, faster installation and repair, and a shortage of skilled labor are issues.

These factors, along with environmental safety, make RTP an excellent choice as oil and gas exploration and production expands.

Reducing pipeline life-cycle costs

RTP is particularly well-suited for gathering lines, high volume pipes that gather oil or gas directly from multiple wells. In high  corrosion situations with iron sulfide in the stream, leaks often occur in a few months when basic steel pipes are used. RTP piping, in contrast, has a life of 20 years in many highly corrosive situations.

RTP can also reduce labor and downtime costs. RTP takes away the need for welding and installs in a fraction of the time needed for steel pipes. For example, one to two kilometers of pipe can be installed in one day versus multiple days for steel piping.

Easily transportable, the piping is pulled from a large spool in lengths up to 600 meters. End fittings, which have been pressure-tested under extreme conditions, are used to join the pipes. No supports are needed and the piping can be laid directly on the ground, requiring no costly excavation.

RTP can also be used to repair corroded steel pipe and is often reusable. When a well has been depleted, oil and gas producers can pull the piping and re-spool it for use in other operations.

A strong alternative

In summary, in many situations, RTP offers numerous benefits as an alternative to steel piping:

  • Lower cost of installation
  • Longer performance
  • Higher reliability
  • Ease of installation
  • Low corrosion rates
  • Long-life system
