Kevlar® Vehicular Armor

The same properties that make DuPont™ Kevlar® such an effective material for use in personal body armor also make it an excellent choice for armoring combat and civilian vehicles.

Combat vehicles

Spall liners are composite panels, made with Kevlar®, mounted to the inside of the shell structure of armored vehicles. They protect personnel inside by catching spall—fragments of the outer shell blown into the vehicle by the concussion of incoming ordinance—before it contacts them. Used alone or in combination with metals or ceramics, spall liners of Kevlar® help increase crew survivability in combat.

Spall liners made with Kevlar® do not melt or shrink when exposed to extreme heat and flame, and only carbonize at very high temperatures (approximately 900ºF in air). They are also extremely resistant to cuts and a broad range of chemicals.

Civilian vehicles

Kevlar® provides an effective, lightweight armor solution for vehicles and light aircraft that require protection against ballistic attack.  Law enforcement agencies, cash security companies, and people who work or live in hostile environments use Kevlar® to increase security in vehicles where weight is critical.

Key advantages for Kevlar® in vehicular armoring include:

  • Ballistic protection
  • Ease of installation
  • Thin, less bulky panels and fewer weight constraints
  • Temperature resistance
  • Few constraints on vehicle performance
