Other uses for Kevlar®

DuPont™ Kevlar® goes into several items that defy simple categorization, but are nonetheless prevalent in everyday life.

The Ove Glove™

The Ove Glove™ is a five-fingered glove that has an outer layer made from Kevlar® and DuPont™ Nomex® brand fibers, making it possible to handle objects up to 540º F. With a comfortable inner layer of machine-washable, double-knit cotton blend, The Ove Glove™ can be worn on either hand, and provides greater dexterity than typical oven mitts.

Air pack harnesses

The breathing systems firefighters use have benefited from the light weight, high strength and temperature resistance of Kevlar® in extremely hazardous conditions. Kevlar® and DuPont™ Nomex® are the primary materials used in the retention harnesses that hold the oxygen tanks on firefighters' backs.

Kevlar® in fire resistant mattresses

Sewing threads made with DuPont™ Kevlar® help increase the overall effectiveness of fire resistant (FR) mattresses by maintaining the integrity of the seams between the panels containing FR material. Because threads made of Kevlar® retain much of their strength at high temperatures, they can help the seams and tape edges stay sealed and keep out flames that would threaten to breach the FR barrier and ignite the fuel materials inside the mattress. Several thread producers offer Kevlar® thread in a variety of colors.

DuPont also offers other high performance FR materials for mattresses including barrier material, filler cloth, and knit offerings. DuPont™ Fire Resistant material incorporates a two-layer system designed specifically for use as a filler cloth in single-sided mattresses. It incorporates a non-woven polyester web laminated to a sheet of inherently fire-resistant fibers, producing a composite material with FR performance, strength and abrasion resistance.
