Photovoltaic Materials

Overview

DuPont supplies a comprehensive system of thick film materials used in the construction of photovoltaic cells. The DuPont™ Solamet® PV series is a specialty system of conductor compositions for the back-side and front-side of silicon photovoltaic cells. Our compositions offer advantages in efficiency and reliability, enabling more advanced and efficient solar cells to be constructed.

DuPont™ Solamet® improves power output by providing state of the art, low resistance electrical contact to SiNx ARC coated solar cells to extract the full benefit of the more popular SiNx process.

Key features of front-side conductors:

  • Controlled penetration of barrier layers such as native SiO2 layer and anti-reflective coatings (ARC)
  • High conductivity enables lower resistance in the bus and grid lines
  • Good line resolution minimize shadowing and maximizes the area available for illumination
  • PV14x is the current market leading series use extensively, with PV15x Cd-free series and PV17x Cd & Pb-free series recently introduced to address the market need for more environmental friendly products

Key features of back-side conductors:

  • Good ohmic contact helps penetrate the native oxide layer on the wafer and generate better contact to the silicon
  • Very Low bow properties
  • High speed printing
  • PV333 (Cd-free) is the standard Aluminum paste, complimented by PV322 (Cd + Pb free) developed for low bow applications.
  • PV34x Pb-free series for low bow on Substrates <200 microns thick
  • PV202 (Cd-free) is the standard Ag/Al paste

Key features of Tabbing conductors:

  • High adhesion for greater reliability
  • Good solderability
  • Good print resolution
  • PV202 (Cd-free) Ag/Al paste is used extensively for applications where the back plane is combined with the solderable Tabs
  • PV583 (Cd + Pb free) pure Ag has particulary high adhesion
