The DuPont Spruance site in Richmond, Va., recently was honored with the 2008 Virginia Torchbearer Award for Central Virginia, presented by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes innovative companies whose outstanding products, services and management practices have propelled Virginia's progress and prosperity. The award also recognizes businesses who exemplify good corporate citizenship.
"To be recognized as a leading corporate citizen in the Commonwealth of Virginia is especially significant because of the history between DuPont and President Thomas Jefferson--a long-time resident of the state of Virginia," said Spruance Plant Manager Joe Internicola. "In 1802, our founder, E.I. du Pont, was encouraged to get into the gunpowder business by President Jefferson."
"We were very pleased to present the Torchbearer Award to DuPont because of the company's tremendously positive impact on the economy and quality of life," said Hugh Keogh, president and CEO of the Virginia Chamber. "Our state is recognized as the No. 1 state in the nation for business and job creation. DuPont is one of the key companies contributing to the state's economic success." Keogh also cited DuPont's constant ability to adapt to change over its 206-year history, as well as its strong, unwavering focus on core values.
